A while back, I posted a picture on Instagram of some sandwich art I came up with for my son’s lunch. I got lots of positive feedback, so today, I’m going to show you exactly how I made them (and you won’t believe how easy it really is)! My little guy loves finding fun sandwiches in his lunch bag at school, but -to be honest- I got a little lazy over the holidays… The holiday hustle, combined that with that first trimester fatigue (let me tell ya; it’s a real thing) mean his lunches haven’t been so fun lately. I’ve noticed the poor little guy seems to have a touch of the winter blues as of late, so I think a little sandwich art could really add some pep to his little step, and sharing this with you was just the icing on the, em, sandwich!
I often make a week’s worth of sandwiches at a time and freeze some of them, and the color seems to hold up well in the freezer! The candy eyes don’t fare quite as well, but they are still pretty cute! Scroll along, and I’ll show you how to turn ordinary sandwiches in to extraordinary ones for your kids’ lunches in no time!

Easy Sandwich Art
For this recipe, you will need:
- Your child’s favorite sandwiches (my son loves PB&J)
- Gel food coloring (color of your choice)
- Cotton swabs
- Cookie cutters and/or sandwich stamps (like these cute ones)
- Candy eyes

Take the top piece of bread for the sandwich and lay flat. Use a cotton swab, dipping only once into your gel food coloring (you don’t want to double dip or you might get moldy colors 🙂 ) and paint a cookie cutter or cookie press.

Gently press onto the bread (don’t cut all the way through if using a cookie cutter) and add any candy eyes or flourishes of your choice. Top the sandwich with your new piece of art, and you are all finished!

Thank you! Some days it’s just hard to come up with something new. I can definitely relate!
Wow! So cute yet so easy! Love this idea.
Thank you!
This sandwich art is super cute. My daughter would have loved these when she was little. This method would make some super cute Hello Kitty sandwiches.
It definitely would! We love Hello Kitty around here, I will have to give that a try!
This is a great idea, for the lunch pack and every situation! My little Freja would love it, thanks!
I am so glad you like it and I hope your little one does too! 🙂
So fun! I love that you used a q tip to create some extra touches. I could use this tip and the edge of a cookie cutter and not have to buy the sandwich stamps. This weeks lunch will be extra fun. Thanks so much for the idea. Love it!
Yes cookies cutters work really well too! 🙂 Thanks so much for reading!
I hear ya on the first trimester fatigue. It got me with each of my pregnancies. This sandwich art is so adorable! My kids love taking their lunch. I am going to try this on their sandwiches and see if they like it (I am sure they will).
Thank you so much and I hope they love it!
Such a cute idea! I love this!
Thank you! 🙂
