Have you ever wished that you could rewind your day? One of the most valuable lessons I have taught my children is that you can “start your day over” at any time! What do I mean by “start your day over?” We have a talented actor and actress in our home, and most days, the Academy Award goes to the 2-to-5-year-old who throws a tantrum over I-can’t-remember-what, and is now crying and pleading to be forgiven for their tantrum. Whether the Oscar goes to a toddler or to a teen, surviving the “artistic outlet” of emotion can be draining for any parent!
In my overwhelmed state, not sure whether to cry, laugh, or simply ignore my child, a few scripture passages come to mind. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness,” and Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”
Start Your Day Over
I am no saint; sometimes I lose it and even say things I wish I could take back, passing the “Oscar” of unpleasant emotions to myself. Once again, these verses come to mind, and now I am the one asking for forgiveness and to start over the day! Sometimes it takes more than words alone to get the day going in the right way; a lot of the time, we need redirection! I find that the best way to do this is to cultivate a change of scenery; a walk around the block, a ride in the car, or a fun adventure through a favorite book can make all the difference! Above all else, I want to show the love of Jesus to my children, I want them to know what it means to be truly forgiven and loved without condition, and I want them to always know that they can “start the day over” anytime they need to!
Life can be hard, draining, and full of emotional Oscar winners. I believe that if we are simply willing to extend grace and to start over at any moment, our day can turn a complete one eighty! By letting the Lord direct our day, when our tired heads hit our pillows, we can rest easy in the knowledge that we traded the Oscar of unchecked emotion for one of love and mercy! Celebrate with me that God’s mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is great!
