Holidays are my thing (in case you hadn’t noticed), and these patriotic popcorn balls are perfect for the 4th of July! A few years back, my husband told me about how his mother would whip up these marshmallow popcorn balls when he was little as a take-along treat to their favorite fireworks displays! I could tell it was a fond memory for him, and I wanted to continue the tradition!
I don’t know what fireworks displays are like in your area, but around here, it can be a bit of a hurry up and wait situation: we hurry for a parking spot and a good seat (usually a patch of grass), then soak ourselves in bug spray (with varying degrees of success) and waaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiit! Munching on these deliciously soft sweet and salty popcorn balls is a perfect way to pass the time (as long as you don’t have too much bug spray on your hands, 😛 ) while you wait for the sky to pop and boom with magical color. I’m confident your taste buds will pop along in excitement! 🙂
I hope this fun and easy popcorn ball recipe will be the start of a fun tradition for you and the ones you love! Have a fun, happy, and safe Independence Day!
Patriotic Popcorn Balls
For this recipe, you will need:
7 cups of popped popcorn, lightly buttered and salted
1 (10 oz) package marshmallows
3 tablespoons butter
Red and blue food coloring
Cut the butter into a few pieces and place in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Add in the marshmallows and heat at thirty-second intervals -stirring in between- until marshmallows are just melted.
Separate mix into three even portions: color one red, one blue, and leave the last one white.
Gently mix 2 cups of popcorn into each color, adding in a little extra popcorn if needed.
Use greased hands to form into colorful popcorn balls (I made three of each color)! 🙂
