I believe in the magic of friendship – do you? If you have been blessed with a wonderful lifelong friend or two, you absolutely know what I mean! I often say of one of my most magical friends (because she is a few years younger than I am and since our families have known each other for generations) that she didn’t have much choice in the matter; we were going to be friends. When I was young, another one of my dearest friends and her family moved into a bus and traveled the country. No matter the miles between us, we wrote (like, with pens and paper!) and we called (yes, called), and whenever we saw each other, it seemed like not a day had passed!
As we grow older, it’s easy to let the magic fade; our demanding schedules get in the way, and the miles between become vast and permanent. We focus on children, work, and laundry. Oh – and the bathroom! Seriously, how can one room go from bright, sparkly-clean to dingy, mustard-colored in less than five seconds?! But I digress…
I don’t need to tell you that there is no magic in that laundry! Children are magical; full of wonder and excitement! My children make me laugh and celebrate more than I ever thought I would! They can also exhaust any lone magician beyond words. Luckily for me, I am never truly a lone magician: I married my best friend thirteen years ago, and there is truly magic in that! But even then, you must nurture the magical spark of friendship! So take a moment to drop a note (yes, a physical note) or to make a call (yes, a legitimate phone call) and keep the magic alive! A life worth celebrating is full of magic, and it’s true that a genuine friend sticks closer than a brother -and that goes both ways.
Let’s be friends!
