A few years ago, I hosted a tea party for Mother’s Day, and I made each guest their own serving tray, personalized just for them! The tea party was a great success, and I know this personal touch made my beloved guests feel special, and it added the extra pizzazz I was looking for! This is one of my favorite projects because it can be completely tailored to keep for yourself or to give as a one-of-a-kind gift! The possibilities are limitless and the materials can include anything from magazine cutouts, fake flowers, buttons, or any small notion that will fit!
My mother still displays her serving tray by hanging it as art on her kitchen wall, so I walk past it often without giving it a second thought. I did give it a second thought the other day, though, and it hit me that Mother’s Day is almost here, and these would make amazing breakfast in bed trays! What could be better than a three-in-one gift?! Show your Mother how much you appreciate her and take her breakfast in bed to a whole new level this year with a lasting piece of handmade art that she can enjoy for years!
DIY Serving Tray!
For this project, you will need:
An old sturdy frame (You can always buy new, just be sure to opt for a wooden frame so you will be able to screw your handles onto it!)
Two drawer handle pulls with screws
Paint (if desired)
A sponge brush
Flowers, cut-outs, trinkets, or any other small favors you would like to use
Back ground paper or fabric
Drill or screw driver (or both)
Glue gun
Start by carefully removing the glass so that you can paint your frame (if desired)!
While the frame is drying (or if you do not need to paint your frame), go ahead and cover the back board of your frame by gluing down background paper or wrapping it in fabric.
Lay out your flowers, cut-outs, or trinkets, keeping in mind the depth between your back board and the glass.
Once you have it just the way you want, glue it all down!
When the frame is dry, attach the handle pulls and reassemble your frame; your tea tray is complete!
Time for tea; Cheerio!
That is so pretty and clever!! I want to try one π
Thank you so much! I hope you have as much fun creating one as I did ! π
This is such a great gift idea! Love it!

Thank you! I have made several of these trays and given them all as gifts! So I decided to keep this one as a Mother’s Day gift to my self! LOL π
So pretty! I love the idea of upcycling older, unused pieces and making them pretty again.
Thank you so much! I love upcycling also; there is joy in making something beautiful again! π
Cute!
Does it make the tea tray heavy? Or can you still carry in some tea in that pretty teapot? π
Oh, no; not unless the frame is heavy to start with! All the little customization pieces are pretty lightweight! The most important step is ensuring your glass is strong and secure in the frame! π
OMG…that is so beautiful. How creative! It makes me want to run out and buy a glue gun! Great job!!
I am happy you like it! My glue gun is one of my favorite things! π
Wonderful idea! It would be so cute to make one yearly and then have a serving tray wall. But the way your mom does it seems so special too. Thanks for the inspiration everyone needs a serving tray for breakfast.
Thank you so much! That would be a great tradition to make one every year!
Those are so cute! I love that they only take a few supplies that would be easy to find. I’m a big tea lover so your first picture really caught my eye.
Thank you! Being on the go so much means that keeping things simple is a BIG priority for me! I am so excited that you like the picture! π
Love this functional and beautiful DIY!
Thank you so much! π
Wow this is such a fun idea! Definitely pinning it for later π
Thank you so much!
